MINES ParisTech is hiring a charge de recherche in the field of virtual reality

In the frame of the development of research and teaching activities in the area of Virtual Reality, MINES ParisTech, member of PSL Research University, is opening a permanent position “chargé de recherche” in the field of Virtual Reality. In MINES ParisTech, a “chargé de recherche” is a member of staff with a permanent position having research as main duty, with some teaching. Equivalent positions outside of France are lecturer or assistant professor.

This position is targeted to a young (approximately 3 – 15 years after PhD) researcher (f/m) willing to develop multidisciplinary research combining fundamental and applied sciences in the area of Virtual Reality.



In line with its training activity, MINES ParisTech develops a research activity that covers a wide range of scientific disciplines. The eighteen research centers are organized in five departments: Earth and Environmental Sciences, Energy and Processes, Mechanics and Materials, Mathematics and Systems, and finally, Economics, Management and Society.

MINES ParisTech research aims at both academic excellence and socio-economic impact. This research model is developed in close interaction with the socio-economic world: private or public sector companies, and also institutions and public administrations. The centre for robotics research topics are:

  • Autonomous Mobile robotics, for which original embedded algorithms are developed
  • Mobile mapping systems for 3D cartography of urban environments
  • Virtual and Augmented Reality, applied to various domains: industrial design, therapy, culture (new forms of cinema, cultural mediation), video games.
  • Intelligent transportation systems
  • Logistics and optimization

MINES ParisTech opens a “Chargé de recherche” position in the Virtual Reality Group.



The candidate is expected to be able to perform fundamental and applied research in the area of Virtual Reality. He/she should be autonomous and develop and build research projects in collaboration with academic and industrial partners.


The successful candidate is expected to participate in existing research topics in the lab (see below) and develop his/her own research direction in the area of Virtual Reality. Finally he will be the advisor to PhD candidates, post-doctoral researchers and trainees. He/she will be expected:

  • Organize and carry out new research to improve the understanding of the conditions of realistic response in VR, propose new topics and perform research with a high scientific visibility being also attractive for industrial applications;
  • Publish in the best scientific journals;
  • Apply for projects in national, European, and international funding agencies and build projects in collaboration with industry keeping, at the same time, high scientific standards.

The lab has a twofold approach to virtual reality, both theoretical and applied. First, we develop knowledge on the relation between immersion (sensori-motor, cognitive) and the behaviour of users while performing a task in virtual environment (VE). As an application, we use that framework in order to develop VE’s that are adapted to industrial use cases. The lab has a strong interest in the research axis of realistic response (or ecological validity) in VR. It is defined as the extent to which the behaviour of the user within the virtual environment is representative of the real behaviour. Realistic response in Virtual Reality is a central question when VR is used as a predictive tool. This is typically the case in the context of industrial product design, where human in the loop simulations of products is part of the design process, to avoid the cost of real prototypes. A second axis of research of strong interest in the lab is the adaptation of VR for a wide public, that opens new questions of acceptability and usability.


The successful candidate will be encouraged to set up or resume small classes or courses that are part of the educational offer of MINES ParisTech. The teacher may also be involved in the Common Core Teachings of his Department in the cycle "Civil Engineer" and the cycle "Engineer Isupfere". He will also be able to intervene in the modules of Generalist Engineer making use of the resources of the Centers of the School. He will finally be able to tutor Acts of Undertaking. He will participate in the selection and graduation of students in the cycles that will appeal to him. He will supervise PhD students, students with Bac +5 or Bac + 6 and engineering students. If necessary, it will contribute to the institution's e-learning offer or to international replications of the School's courses at its international partners, in both rench and english. He will have to prove an educational experience in the field of the job. He will assume his share of the administrative work of organization of the lessons and the industrial visits.

The ability to deliver English lessons or MOOCs is required. An experience of digital education is a plus.

The successful candidate is expected to participate to various teaching activities in MINES ParisTech, in particular, in teaching for “Paris Sciences et Lettres” (PSL) Research University (undergraduate and postgraduate) in the area of Virtual and Augmented Reality. He/she will also be encouraged to suggest new courses which would enrich the spectrum of courses offered by MINES ParisTech.

Candidate qualifications
  • PhD in the fields affiliated to Virtual Reality
  • Demonstrated experience in students’ supervision
  • Interest to develop in Virtual Reality high-level research attracting international recognition, in collaboration with cognitive science researchers
  • A previous experience in one of these domains would be appreciated
  • Visual perception of materials in virtual reality. Past experience in setting up perceptive validations of physically based rendering of materials in VR
  • Adapting VR for the wide public. Experiences in setting up real scale usability experiments of VR out of the lab (cinemas, cultural sites)
  • Capacity to generate a strong activity in publishing and in research visibility
  • Demonstrated experience in industrial research
  • Demonstrated experience in working in the international context
  • Demonstrated capacity to communicate in English
  • Will to learn French for foreign candidates.
