Thermomechanics of flow and cooling of polymers or complex fluids in transformation and shaping and the resulting properties

Knowledge of rheological comportment, development of original experimental means and utilization of calculation methods, developed mainly in cooperation with the group CIM at CEMEF

Key competences : - Analysis of rheological comportment of polymers and complex fluids in liquid, solid and viscous state - Applications for shaping processes: experimental and theoretical approach for most of the polymer transformation processes

Applications


Materials : - Thermoplastics, thermo set material, biopolymers, mineral paste, minerals, glass... The CEMEF research activities concern all types of material (metal, polymers, composites, glass, material for food products ...).

Objective : - Optimization of tool conception and manufacturing conditions for optimized product properties and best economic conditions.

Methodology : - Combine experimentation and digital simulation

Equipment


Parallel and sequential calculation capacities with about 10 parallel calculators with different architectures including one new cluster with 500 processors installed in 2008.

Shaping and forming machines : - Single screw extruder Kaufman diam. 40mm, single screw Collins for rubber extrusion, double screw Clextral BC45 - Injection press DK (110t)

Prototypes for blowing double drawing of bottles - Rheocord Haake (internal mixer, single screw extruder)

R6D and workshop : CAO/DAO 3D IDEAS MS11 - 3 towers 1 with digital controls - 3 milling machines 2 with digital controls - 1 mini milling robot to mini to turn around test bar - 1 plane grinder - Various machines for cutting, folding, welding, grit blasting

Microscopy : - Optical microscope in transmission (with micro traction device, film micro compression, static crystallization, in shear and in stretch.) - Optical metallographic microscope, inversed Olympus PMG3

Electron microscopes : - Environmental (Philips XL30 ESEM LaB6), heating plate Oxford 1500C, EBSD automatic with digital camera and Peltier Philips blank - Jeol 35CF - Transmission electron microscopes (CM12 TEM/STEM Philips) with heated specimen stage 600C

Spectrometer : - EDX (Oxford/Inca on MEB Philips XL30 ESEM),(Tracor/Noran on MEB Jeol 35CF) - XPS (Riber MAC2) - SIMS static at flight time [ToF-SIMS] (PHI TRIFT I)
