MINES ParisTech is hiring an assistant professor in data science for energy efficiency

Developing its research and teaching activities in the field of Energy efficiency, MINES ParisTech, member of PSL Research University, opens an assistant professor position in Data and artificial intelligence for Energy efficiency.

This 3-years position (for an initial period of one year, renewable twice) is open to a young researcher (man or woman), who appreciates a multidisciplinary work combining fundamental research and industrial applications. The successful candidate will take part to the partnership research work of his/her team and contribute to industrial and economic innovation. He/She will also have the opportunity of defining a PhD subject during his/her first year at CES, that he/she will supervise together with a senior member of the team who is officially accredited for such a task.

THE RESEARCH AT MINES ParisTech

MINES PARISTECH CENTER FOR Energy efficiency of systems

The Center for Energy efficiency of systems (CES) works focus on energy efficiency improvement of complex systems. These systems concern buildings, industrials processes and transport. Other essential criteria as the cost, compactness, tightness, flexibility and controllability, beside the energy criterion, are taken into account.

The position is located at CES in Palaiseau, a MINES ParisTech site. This site is composed of 15 permanent scientific researchers, 30 doctoral students and PhD students.

CES aims at strengthening his team in data science for energy efficiency.

 

DESCRIPTION OF THE VACANCY

The successful candidate is expected to have already proven his/her ability to elaborate academic research in Energy and Data science. He/she is expected to develop an independent and creative research program devoted to his/her topics, initiate an externally funded research program, and establish a strong relationship with academic communities and technological companies.

 

Research

The candidate will be able to contribute to theoretical and methodological studies as well as to their application to concrete cases. According to the needs, but also to his/her research interests and abilities, he/she will contribute to:

  • Use of data (big data) for energy efficiency of systems analysis
  • Uncertainty study, development of optimal instrumentation plans and data reconciliation
  • Development of hybrid statistic/physic models of energy system behaviours.

The successful candidate will develop an independent and creative research program devoted to these topics, supervise PhD students, publish in the best journals and international conferences and be an active player in the development of the Center’s joint research activities.

 

Teaching activities

The successful candidate will be encouraged to set up or resume small classes or courses that are part of the educational offer of MINES ParisTech. The teacher may also be involved in the Common Core Teachings of his Department in the cycle "Civil Engineer" and the cycle "Engineer Isupfere". He will also be able to intervene in the modules of Generalist Engineer making use of the resources of the Centers of the School. He will finally be able to tutor Acts of Undertaking. He will participate in the selection and graduation of students in the cycles that will appeal to him. He will supervise PhD students, students with Bac +5 or Bac + 6 and engineering students. If necessary, it will contribute to the institution's e-learning offer or to international replications of the School's courses at its international partners, in both french and english. He will have to prove an educational experience in the field of the job. He will assume his share of the administrative work of organization of the lessons and the industrial visits.

The ability to deliver English lessons or MOOCs is required. An experience of digital education is a plus.

He/she will take part to the various undergraduate and graduate courses and teaching sessions in which CES is involved (particularly to energy teaching of Mines ParisTechDEP department: thermodynamics, thermics, mechanics of fluids. He will be a support to Master PSL teachers et to ISUPFERE formation), open to MINES ParisTech students as well as to engineers undergoing post-graduate education. He/she will be encouraged to organize new courses to improve DEP department educational offer.

Special features of the candidate’s profile

At the time of the appointment, the applicant must have a doctoral degree in Energy especially oriented to data analysis, a special inclination for digital development and a solid experience in Energy. As the position implies cooperation with international partners, strong social skills as well as good knowledge of English language are required. Post-doctoral experience in a foreign laboratory would be an asset for this position.

The applicant will have to show his/her capacity to conduct research work in a multidisciplinary context, together with an aptitude for teamwork. A first experience in academic or industrial joint research would be appreciated.

The position will evolve to a permanent position after 3 years for an excellent candidate.
