AbstractIn order to guarantee the integrity of structures, fracture mechanics tests on pre-cracked specimens are often used to measure the fracture toughness. Despite the cost and difficulty of carrying out these tests, these tests complete the conventional impact fracture tests done on notched specimens (Charpy test) by providing directly usable quantities for design.

To obtain these toughness measurements, it is often necessary to use specimens of the largest possible size in order to ensure mechanical conditions that are close to or more conservative than those of the structure.
Nevertheless, it is not always possible and even desirable to take thick specimens for several reasons (thickness of the product too low, heterogeneity of the microstructure inherited from the manufacturing process, etc.).

The purpose of this generic study is to develop experimental methods and analyzes for the measurement of toughness on thin specimens. This methodology will then be applied to two materials with different fracture mechanisms. The link between microstructure and mechanical properties will be the basis of methodological development.
